How Would I Know If I Have a Sinus Infection?
Sinus infections, like almost every other sickness, typically get worse during the winter months. And due to the rise in COVID-19 and flu cases, it can be difficult to know whether you’re dealing with one if you start to feel sick.
Our AFC Urgent Care Southcenter team provides some helpful information about sinus infections below, so keep reading!
What Is a Sinus Infection?
A sinus infection, or sinusitis, is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue that surrounds the sinuses. The sinus make mucus, which filters out and protects the body from harmful dust, allergens and pollutants.
When sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. We’ve listed the most common causes of sinusitis below.
Common Sinus Infection Causes
- A common cold
- Allergic rhinitis, which is swelling of the lining of the nose caused by allergens
- Nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose)
- A deviated septum, which is a shift in the nasal cavity
What Will I Experience If I Have a Sinus Infection?
Because a sinus infection often has similar symptoms as a common cold or allergies, it can be hard to tell the difference between the three. One of the biggest differentiating factors of sinus infections, though, is the color and thickness of mucus. Yes, it sounds gross, but sinus infections usually produce thick, colored mucus alongside a fever.
We’ve listed other tell-tale signs and symptoms of sinus infections below.
Common Sinus Infection Symptoms
- Postnasal drip
- Discolored nasal discharge (greenish in color)
- Nasal stuffiness or congestion
- Tenderness of the face (particularly under the eyes or at the bridge of the nose)
- Frontal headaches
- Pain in the teeth
- Coughing
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Bad breath
