What Can I Do to Stay Safe in the Sun?

The sun is a beautiful thing—giving off light in our days and warming up the temperature. It beckons us outside, too!

But before you head outside to enjoy the warmth of the sun, it’s important to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your skin. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Southcenter has some tips on how you can do just that this summer and beyond.

Why Do I Need to Protect My Skin?

The sun emits what are known as ultraviolet rays. There are three types, UVA, UVB and UVC rays. UVC rays are the most dangerous, but they don’t pass through the ozone layer.

UVA and UVB rays both make it to earth and can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. That’s true even on cloudy days, since UVA rays pop through even on overcast days. That’s why you need to protect your skin even when it’s not so sunny outside.

Effects of the Sun on Skin

  • Increases signs of aging, such as wrinkles
  • Increases risk of sunburn
  • Increases risk of heat rash
  • Increases risk of skin cancer

Is Sunscreen Enough to Protect Me?

That’s a bit of a trick question! Sunscreen is your first and best defense against the harmful rays of the sun. But it shouldn’t be your only one.

When it comes to sunscreen, choose one labeled as broad spectrum with an SPF of at least 30. Apply it to all exposed skin before going outside, even on days that are overcast.

Other Sun Safety Basics

  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often if getting wet.
  • Try to avoid being outside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is most intense.
  • When outside, seek shade when possible.
  • Wear a lip balm with sunscreen to protect your lips.
  • Put on a broad-brimmed hat to protect your ears, scalp and nose.
